A new collection of one of a kind works by Blair Anderson along with the students, faculty, and junior residents of SilverWorks.
Artist's Statement
Before a gemstone is used by a jewelry artist it goes on a long magical journey. It is discovered, classified, mined, cut, sold, resold and then becomes immortalized in the artist’s hands and ultimately the person that finally gets to wear it.
This very special life cycle is highlighted in this collection in which I have chosen and am inspired by the lesser commonly used gems. To the best of my knowledge no conflict stones were used in any of my pieces.
About the Artist
Practicing the art and craft of silversmithing for over 30 years, Anderson has shown her work in over 30 galleries and juried exhibitions across the USA and Canada. She first studied under metal artist Vesta Ward in Southern California where Anderson fell in love with working in metal. Desiring to elevate her art form beyond mere adornment, she began to create works in silver that could be framed and displayed like other works of art. Her skill has been recognized with government commissions and design awards, including a prestigious NICHE award for her hand made sterling silver eyewear.
Anderson now shares her years of experience and love of the craft at SilverWorks, the metalsmithing studio, classroom and gallery located at historic Glen Echo Park.
The Exhibit
The exhibit features new works with interesting gemstones. A section of the exhibit shows how a gem goes from rough to a cabochon. Finally, and interactive globe lets the view explore where in the world gems featured in the show came from.
