A Widow's Mite
Social divide exists throughout history, transcending culture. This piece represents one person’s voluntary sacrifice of all that she had.
These coins were used in the Holy Lands during the life time of Jesus Christ. They were struck during the reign of Alexander Jannaeus 103 - 76 BC, the first king of the Hasmonacan dynasty to produce coins. Often circulating for more than a century they would have been the mites as discussed in Mark 12:43.
Piece of History: Roman era mite coin.
